GEN. BOROH VISITS ONDO GOVERNOR IN CONTINUATION OF FG’S PEACE INITIATIVE: PRESENTS PAPER ON REGIONAL SECURITY AT 2ND NIGER DELTA COUNCIL IN AKURE.

As part of efforts to arrest the security situation in the Niger Delta Region, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd.) visited the Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Saturday to discuss on strategic plans to resolve issues affecting the security situation in the state.

He expressed worry about reported cases of insecurity in some riverine communities in the State, adding that he was in the Ondo State on a verification mission to investigate the issues for himself concerning the reported security situation in parts of the State, with a view to proffering lasting solutions to the fundamental causes of the crises and secondly, to participate at the Niger Delta Council as Council Member and resource person on the regional security.Gen. Boroh, a keynote discussant at the second Niger Delta Council meeting in Akure, informed the governor that he was in the State to ensure that the relative peace is sustained to allow for economic and infrastructural development in the State and beyond.

“I have been around in the State for a while. I have been to the riverine area to investigate what is happening. I came basically because of the security situation in parts of the State, particularly in some Ijaw communities.

“My area of operational responsibility is the nine Niger Delta States which include Ondo State, while my area of influence extends to Lagos and Ogun States. We still have our people that are resident in those states as well and we have the responsibility to manage their issues.

“Am also here to participate in the second Niger Delta Council meeting as a presenter and a discussant, to exchange my views on the issues of security in the Niger Delta as well. I am here as part of my responsibility to ensure peace and stability in Ondo State”, the Amnesty Coordinator explained.

Responding, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu urged the Federal Government to expand the current Amnesty programme to accommodate more youths in the Niger Delta region.

The governor said the Federal Government could take a cue from Ondo State, which created a University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa, where people could learn how to build boats and take Marine Engineering courses.

“Let us integrate more of them into the Amnesty programme; let us engage them to reduce youth restiveness in the region,” he said.
